Founded in 1367, the University of Pécs (pronounced "pay-tch") is the oldest university in Hungary, and one of the oldest in Europe. Today, it is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the country and offers a wide spectrum of courses to some 22,000 students in approximately 500 different programs. Its 10 faculties and schools (similar to CWU's Colleges) include the faculties of Business and Economics; Cultural Sciences, Education & Regional Development; Engineering and Information Technology; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Law; Music and Visual Arts; Sciences; and Pharmacy, as well as the Medical School. The University of Pécs is one of the leading research universities in the country, with a huge professional research background, and functions as a knowledge center for innovation in southern Transdanubia.
Located near the Hungarian-Croatian border, the city of Pécs itself has an ancient history, with evidence of human occupation in the area dating as far back as 6000 years. Invading Romans pushed out the Celtic and Illyrian peoples and founded the city that would become Pécs in the 2nd century CE. The Magyar tribes from whom the present dominant culture is descended conquered and settled in the greater Carpathian Basin in the 9th century CE.
Students may study for a semester or full academic year with English-taught classes available in a variety of fields, including business (not AACSB-accredited), communication and media studies, education, humanities, international relations, social and natural sciences, computer science, music and visual arts (limited to music or art majors) and law. Optional Hungarian language and culture classes are also available.
The University also offers two 4-week summer schools that focus on specific topics: European Studies & Leadership Skills and International Human Rights Law & Debate Academy.
