Specialized Academics Programs

McNair Scholars Program

The McNair Scholars Program at CWU remains committed to helping students from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented minority backgrounds pursue their goals of earning doctoral degrees. Our program cultivates a supportive environment where students can participate in paid research opportunities, attend local and national conferences, receive guidance through their graduate school search, and more.

We are proud to be one of the original McNair institutions in the country and look forward to assisting future generations of scholars and innovators in building their futures.

Science Talent Expansion Program

Are you majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field at CWU? Then, you’re eligible to join our Science Talent Expansion Program (STEP), which creates new opportunities for STEM majors to collaborate on research projects, participate in hands-on learning experiences, and receive mentorship. Since 2003, STEP has brought young scholars from underrepresented backgrounds together and equipped them with essential critical thinking and scientific communication skills to excel in their future careers.

Discover how STEP can support your academic and professional growth.

Yearlong Exploration of Social Sciences Program (YESS)

The Yearlong Exploration of Social Sciences Program (YESS) invites students into a process of discovery and academic exploration within the social sciences field. Here, students can enroll in an integrated sequence of classes and engage in enrichment activities and research opportunities. Topics include race and ethnicity, the environment and development, identity, and politics and how they shape our society and culture.
