The University of Dundee traces its history to 1881, though it was either closely related to or fully incorporated in the University of St. Andrews until independence in 1967. The university is well-known for biomedical research, and has one of the United Kingdom's top art schools. Students at the University can live, study and socialize on what has been described as the "Friendliest Campus in Scotland" (Virgin Alternative Guide to UK Universities), while The Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2014 ranked Dundee 1st in Scotland and 4th in the UK overall, scoring particularly highly for central / convenient facilities (ranked 1st in the UK); accommodation (ranked 1st in the UK); affordability of shop/bar/amenities (ranked 1st in the UK); students' union (ranked 2nd in the UK and 1st in Scotland). The compact but lively campus is situated right in the center of Dundee, five minutes from the city's premier retail, leisure, cultural and entertainment facilities, and can provide for all aspects of student life.
