Program Type: Exchange

Annual Available Placements: 2 students for 2 semesters or equivalent.

Founded in Kobe by a US-American missionary in 1889, Kwansei Gakuin has since grown into a leading private comprehensive and integrated educational institution that includes not only the university, but also a junior college and K-12 schools on eight campuses. Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) still identifies itself as a faith-based institution, though does not require exchange students to attend chapel as it does degree-seeking students. It "values inclusiveness for students from all backgrounds". KGU offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in 40 disciplines and has total a student body of approximately 25,000.

CWU students will study in the Contemporary Japan Program (CJP) at KGU's main Nishinomiya-Uegahara Campus, located in a quiet, residential area of the city of Nishinomiya. The CJP consists of two program tracks: the Japanese Language Track and the Modern Japan Track. The former focuses on Japanese language--though may include English-taught electives--and requires participants at least to be able to fluently read, write and pronounce the Japanese Hiragana and Katakana phonetic scripts by KGU's Japanese Placement Test administered at the beginning of the semester. The latter track focuses on English-taught classes--including the mandatory Modern Japan Seminar, though can also include Japanese language classes.

Housing options include both student residences and homestays with local families vetted by KGU staff.
