History, Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Program Description

The History major, both large and small plans, prepares students to engage with the wider world from a more informed perspective; to understand the intersection of local, regional, national, and global factors; and to communicate ideas in a clear and meaningful way. We prioritize flexibility, international perspectives, diversity, and rigor. A history degree focuses on achievement, not convenience.

The History Department offers degrees that are not just pieces of paper, but instead represent the mastery of knowledge, skills, and qualities that create better citizens, strong writers, thoughtful and able analysts, careful researchers, excellent teachers, and outstanding employees. Our degree path offers flexibility, rather than restricting people to predetermined careers.

Likely Career Paths

Law, politics, archives, libraries, organizational research, museums, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and new areas such as public history and digital humanities.

Advising Notes

  • A minimum of a 2.25 GPA is required in the program.
  • HIST 302 and HIST 481, students must earn a minimum grade of C as a major requirement.
  • Any Washington state DTA (Direct Transfer Agreement) degree will satisfy all general education requirements.
  • Students transferring in to pursue the History/Social Studies Teaching (HSST) major will also have to declare the Secondary Education Program and apply to the Teacher Certification Program( once you have obtained/transferred in 45+ credits. Additionally, as a HSST major, you will have two advisors from two different academic colleges: College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), specific to the HSST major requirements, and the College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS), specific to the Secondary Education Program.
  • Students transferring from semester-based schools should be aware that 3-credit semester classes transfer to CWU as 4.5 credits.
  • 100 or 200 level classes taken at community colleges or other universities are generally not acceptable as substitutions for upper-division major or minor requirements.
  • Students should declare a major or minoras early as possible, in order to get into the system as a history major or minor and to be assigned to an advisor.
  • Major requirements may change over time; students will be expected to meet the catalog requirements in place for the quarter they are admitted to the major.
