Program Description

Do you want to graduate with an adaptable, tech-savvy, professional degree? Our writing program is designed to prepare students for success in the contemporary work environment. It combines the rigor of creative writing in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting with the practical elements of professional and technical writing and editing. The major’s interdisciplinary range allows students to shape their major with courses that best suit their interests and goals. Students in the program gain an in-depth understanding of multiple genres. They learn how to give helpful, good-spirited feedback to fellow writers. They gain valuable experience writing for their audiences, editing for content and correctness, practicing genre-specific craft, thinking critically, working on the web and making a strong impression with language.

Course Planning

Students interested in transferring to the Professional and Creative Writing major at CWU should complete one of the AA-DTA degrees available from any of Washington’s community colleges.
It is not required that students complete any writing classes outside of general education requirements prior to starting the major at CWU.
The Transfer Equivalency Site (TES) provides CWU equivalencies for courses taken at other colleges and universities

Advising Notes

Students completing a Washington state AA-DTA can complete the PCW degree in just six full-time quarters.
Students will work with the department advisor and faculty on course and career planning.
Students may choose to focus more on professional writing or creative writing or take courses within both areas.
The major content courses, starting with an introduction to creative writing, are designed specifically to work with and build upon each other.

Any Washington state DTA (Direct Transfer Agreement) degree will satisfy all general education requirements.
Major requirements may change over time; students will be expected to meet the catalog requirements in place the quarter they are admitted to the major.
