English Language and Literature, Bachelor of Arts (BA)


Program Description

The English Language and Literature major will broaden your knowledge of literary history and traditions, develop your understanding of different cultures, and introduce you to brilliant works of literature and poetics. Our inclusive and innovative curriculum offers a broad selection of courses that cross national borders, genres, and cultures, while emphasizing diverse and minoritized voices. Our faculty have unique strengths in transpacific and transatlantic literatures, gender and sexuality studies, and ethnic studies that connect our courses to real-world issues. We closely mentor our students in research, writing, career professionalization, and preparation for graduate study. This degree will prepare you with essential skills in persuasive communication, analytical reasoning, creative thinking, and emotional intelligence that are most in demand by employers in a variety of professional fields

Key Considerations

Course Planning

  • Students interested in transferring to the English Language and Literature major at CWU should complete one of the AA-DTA degrees available from any of Washington’s community colleges.
  • The Transfer Equivalency Site (TES)provides CWU equivalencies for courses taken at other colleges and universities.

Advising Notes

  • Students coming in with an AA-DTA can generally complete the program in six full-time quarters.
  • Students will work with the department advisor and faculty on course and career planning.
  • Projected course offering schedules are available on the Department of English site: CWU English
  • Any Washington state DTA (Direct Transfer Agreement) degree will satisfy all general education requirements.
  • Major requirements may change over time; students will be expected to meet the catalog requirements in place at the time they are admitted to the major.
