Food Science and Nutrition, Bachelor of Science (BS)
Program Description
The Food Science and Nutrition degree prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the food and nutrition industry including food processing companies (quality assurance and product development positions), food distributors, food brokerage companies, restaurant and institutional food service, pharmaceutical sales, and positions requiring the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN) credential. Students majoring in Food Science and Nutrition receive a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Nutrition with a specialization in either Dietetics or Foods and Nutrition.

Advising Notes
- Prospective students must complete NUTR 101, Introduction to Human Nutrition, NUTR 240, Introduction to Foods and NUTR 240LAB, Introduction to Foods Laboratory with a B (3.0) or higher, and CHEM 111, Introduction to Chemistry and CHEM 111LAB, Introductory Chemistry Laboratory with a C (2.0) or higher before being admitted into the major.
- Transfer students should apply to be a pre-major in the BS Food Science and Nutrition program prior to completing NUTR 240L. The pre-major status would allow assignment of a faculty major advisor.
- Students must receive a grade of C (2.0) or higher in all other major courses.
- All students should also meet with the department’s professional academic advisor Pat Coffey (Patrick.Coffey@cwu.edu).
- Any Washington state DTA (Direct Transfer Agreement) degree will satisfy all general education requirements.
- Major requirements may change over time; students will be expected to meet the catalog requirements in place at the time they are admitted to the major.
