Who was Stella Moreno?

Dr. Moreno was a devoted educator at CWU for 31 years. She will be remembered for her passionate advocacy of humanities education. She took pride in being a leader for the Latino and Latin American Studies program, serving as director from 2012-17
She also played a crucial role in building a community of Spanish-language literary writers in the Pacific Northwest and supported Ellensburg’s Hispanic community by serving on the board of directors of the Apoyo food bank and advocating for Spanish-speaking residents of Ellensburg.
Travel to Colombia Virtually and Physically through the STELLA Project!
The STELLA Project started during the Covid 19 pandemic to offer Spanish students an opportunity to converse with Spanish-speaking peers. It was created to honor former faculty member and friend, Professor Stella Moreno who was originally from Colombia.
Spanish Program

Enroll in any Spanish courses this coming Fall and experience a virtual exchange with Colombian students from the city of Medellín, Colombia!
Improve your speaking Spanish skills by conversing with Colombian fellow students at the University Institution of ESUMER who will practice their English with you!
Once you have established virtual contact with your Colombian peers, join Dr. Kasselis and a group of fellow students to explore the city of Medellín first- hand during a faculty-led language and culture study abroad trip over Spring break 2024.

Study Abroad in Colombia During Spring Break
Complete this five credit study abroad program by taking SPAN 347 - Exploring the Land of Magic Realism: A Virtual Voyage Through Colombian History and Culture on campus (three credits) and WLC 347 - Study Abroad (two credits) during Spring Break. Travel to Medellín, Colombia to complete WLC 347.
Prepare for your study abroad or enrich your knowledge of the Spanish language and Colombian culture through an elective course SPAN 347 (three credits) offered in Winter. The course counts as an elective for all Spanish majors and is required for those students who are traveling to for their study abroad.Once in Colombia, students will experience Colombian history and culture first-hand while perfecting their oral and written Spanish skills in a variety of academic and non-academic settings. CWU students will attend university courses with Colombian peers as well as cultural and linguistic lectures from local experts, and they will discover the riches of Medellín and its surroundings in guided excursions.
