    These are the specialty areas in which a person can seek Business & Industry Route CTE certification in the state of Washington. The area(s) in which a person qualifies will depend on their occupational experience. 6000 hours of occupational experience is required in addition to the Business & Industry Route CTE coursework to become certified in any particular specialty area.

    CTE Candidates must have 6000 hours of paid occupational experience in the area for which certification is sought. Documentation of this experience will be evaluated by OSPI.

     

  • Course Offerings

    To obtain CTE certification, career and industry professionals must complete all 9 courses listed below. Fully certificated teachers who already hold a degree in teaching can typically waive two or three classes. Waivers are granted based on the assessment of equivalency between courses.

    • CTE 310A: Teaching Methods (4)*
    • CTE 310B: Occupational Analysis/Safety (3)
    • CTE 310C: Course Organization & Curriculum Design (5)*
    • CTE 492: Block 1 Practicum (2)*
    • CTE 311A: Coordination Techniques of Cooperative Education (3)
    • CTE 311B: History and Philosophy of CTE (3)
    • CTE 311C: Student & Professional Leadership (4)
    • CTE 311D: School Law and Issues Related to Abuse (2)*
    • CTE 492: Block 2 Practicum (2)
    * Current teachers may be able to waive this class; determination made upon evaluation of transcript (School Law/Abuse must have been completed in the last 5 years per WA state requirements)
     
    CWU is excited to offer CTE courses in an individually paced, fully online course modality. The instructor will be available to answer questions throughout the course and students will have the opportunity to meet with their program advisor regularly. Start any time with rolling enrollment and complete coursework at the pace that meets your needs. 
  • Program Requirements

    Business and industry professionals complete 9 classes. Fully certificated teachers who already hold a degree in education may be able to waive 2 or 3 of the required courses after a transcript evaluation. 

    In addition to coursework, the following requirements must be fulfilled: 

    • Basic Skills
      • West B Scores in Reading, Writing, and Math
      • ACT or SAT also meet this requirement (must have a score in all 3 areas)
    • Background Clearance
      • Background/Fingerprints Clearance on file with OSPI
    • Industry Experience
      • 6000 hours of work experience in the specialty area in which CTE certification is sought
      • OSPI handles the verification of this experience during the application process for the Initial CTE Certificate
  • Enrollment Information

    Registration & Rolling Enrollment

    Accepted applicants will be contacted regarding enrollment. Registration is completed via webform. Due to the modality of this online, individually-paced program, accepted applicants can register and begin the Career and Technical Education certification courses at any time. 

    Payment Information

    Cost of enrollment is $250 per credit, plus up to $100 in fees. Tuition is due within 60 days of enrollment. Fees are due on the first day of class. If a school district is paying tuition and fees on your behalf, you must contact Guaranteed Sources in Student Accounts at GuaranteedSources@cwu.edu within 30 days or enrolling to make payment arrangements. 

    Cancellation Policy

    Full refunds will be allowed for withdrawals within 72 hours of enrollment. No refunds will be given after the allotted time. Withdrawal requests must be made in writing and sent to cte@cwu.edu via email. All courses must meet minimum enrollment to run. Students will be notified via email if they have enrolled in a course that did not meet the minimum enrollment requirement.
