Marshall W. Mayberry Arboretum
Come For a Visit
Opened in 1979, the Marshall W. Mayberry Arboretum is named after founding member of the CWU botany program, Dr. Marshall W. Mayberry, who served as a faculty member in the biology department at CWU for 23 years and continued to teach part time at CWU for many years after his retirement. Curation of the arboretum continues under the Department of Biological Sciences.
A Museum of Trees
Along with being a beautiful shared space that is enjoyed year round, the arboretum affords us an opportunity to view a wide assortment of species in one location.
The initial planting for the arboretum included seven trees: Dawn Redwood, European Hornbeam, American Sweetgum, White Ash, Japanese Zelkova, European White Birch and a Little-leaf Linden. The arboretum has grown since that time to include more than 80 trees native to areas that span the globe.

Many of the trees currently in the arboretum have been planted in honor of Biology professors and several are CWU Class Trees.

Want to learn more?
An interactive online map of the arboretum is available and includes information on which trees are dedicated to past members of CWU or to classes. We welcome you to explore in person the next time you are on the beautiful CWU Ellensburg Campus. A walking tour map is provided for easy off-line viewing.
The Arboretum surrounds the CWU Biology Greenhouse which houses plants for instruction and research purposes and hosts open hours for the public during the academic school year every most every Friday from 1:00-3:00. When planning to the arboretum, please also consider stopping by the greenhouse.
