Non-Traditional Students

Am I a Non-Traditional Student?

There are many paths to a college degree and yours doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

At Central Washington University, we welcome students who are returning to education after time away, looking to advance their careers, supporting families, or changing direction entirely. If you're exploring what comes next, you’ll find flexible programs and a community built to support your success.

Who is considered a Non-Traditional student at CWU?

You are considered a Non-Traditional student if you will be age 25 or older when you begin at CWU. Many of our non-traditional students balance work, family responsibilities, and big life goals, and they bring a wealth of experience and motivation to the classroom.

You may also identify as non-traditional if you:

  • Started college in the past but didn’t finish.
  • Earned credits through Running Start or College in the High School and are returning as an older student.
  • Are reentering the workforce after time away.
  • Are pursuing a second bachelor’s degree or changing careers.
  • Prefer flexible, online, or evening learning options to fit your schedule.
  • Want a program that recognizes your prior learning, work experience, or military training.

At CWU, 17% of our undergraduate students are 25 or older so you are not alone on this journey.

If you already have a bachelor's degree from a 4-year institution and are not seeking a master's degree, you are considered a post-baccalaureate applicant. Please apply using the standard undergraduate application and identify yourself as a post-baccalaureate applicant in the appropriate section. You are required to send official transcripts from all colleges attended. High school transcripts and SAT / ACT scores are not required.

If you are seeking a master's degree, please visit our Graduate Studies Admissions.
