What Is a HyFlex Course?
HyFlex means flexibility—and yes, we love that for you.
A HyFlex course gives students more than one way to participate in the same class. Depending on the course, you may be able to attend in person, join online, or complete work asynchronously. In other words, HyFlex helps you stay connected to your class even when life, work, distance, or scheduling challenges get in the way.
For World Languages and Cultures, this flexibility is especially important because language learning happens in a sequence. Starting with the first course can open the door to the second, third, and even advanced levels of language study. Before you assume a class will not work with your schedule or location, check the HyFlex options first.
What Are the Different Modalities?
In-Person
You attend class on campus at the scheduled time and location.
Online Synchronous
You attend class online at the scheduled time. You are not physically in the classroom, but you participate live with your instructor and classmates.
Online Asynchronous
You complete course activities online without attending at a specific class meeting time. You are still responsible for deadlines, assignments, and instructor expectations.
HyFlex
A HyFlex course may allow students to participate in more than one way, such as in person, online live, or through asynchronous online work. The exact options may vary by course, so always review the course details and class notes carefully.
Fall 2026 HyFlex Language Courses
World Languages and Cultures plans to offer several HyFlex courses during Fall 2026, including:
- ASL 151 - First-Year ASL
- RUSS 151 – First-Year Russian
- SPAN 251 – Second-Year Spanish
- SPAN 345 – Spanish for Heritage Speakers
These courses may offer students options for participating in person, online synchronously, or through asynchronous online coursework. The participation options may differ by course and section. Students should review the class notes and contact the instructor or World Languages and Cultures when clarification is needed.
To locate these courses, visit the CWU Class Search, select Fall 2026, and search by the course subject and number. CWU’s Class Search provides section-specific details such as meeting times, instructor, location, and mode of instruction. (CWU PeopleSoft)

Because your future self will thank you.
HyFlex courses can help you continue your language studies even if you live far from campus, work during the day, commute, care for family, or simply need more flexibility. You may be able to begin or continue studying Spanish, ASL, Japanese, Russian, or another language without putting your goals on hold.
Before deciding that a course will not work for you, look closely at the class details and ask questions. The option you need may already be available.
How to Search for HyFlex or Online Language Courses
When searching for classes, be sure to select the “Search Web Classes Only” button. This step is important because it allows your search results to include online and HyFlex course options that may not appear in a standard class search.
- Open the CWU Class Search.
- Select Fall 2026 as the term.
- Select the “Search Web Classes Only” button.
- Enter the subject and course number, such as RUSS 151, SPAN 251, or SPAN 345.
- Open the course details and read the class notes carefully.
Important information about synchronous, asynchronous, online, or HyFlex participation may appear in the class notes. The Fall 2026 schedule is currently available through CWU’s Class Search system. (CWU PeopleSoft)
