Undergraduate Research and Funding

Providing research opportunities for all undergraduate majors is a primary of goal the Physics Department. The experience of conducting research gives students a boost in the skills needed to succeed in graduate school and the workplace. It also builds confidence and enables students to display excellence beyond the classroom.

All physics majors (including B.S., B.A., and the Engineering Dual Degree) must complete a research project. Research projects take several quarters to complete; therefore, students must have a research plan (pdf) approved by their physics advisor prior to their junior year (or 2 academic years before their anticipated graduation date). Undergraduate Research Tracks

Students at CWU can fulfill the research requirement through several tracks that culminate in a final 2 credits of PHYS 495. The different tracks are designed to offer flexibility. Students are encouraged to discuss their options with their physics advisor. Go to the Undergraduate Research Tracks page for more information on all tracks.

Research Opportunities Off-Campus

Students have the option to complete research projects during the summer at another University or Laboratory (public or private). Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is a popular program. Find REU opportunities now. Due dates are typically in February.

Funding for Student Research

Central Washington University offers several modes of financial support for undergraduates who conduct research:
