About Us

Electrical Shop

The Facilities electrical staff installs, programs, and maintains campus building electrical devices including receptacles, lights, motors, pumps and controls for building systems, variable frequency drives, computerized light controllers, as well as ADA door openers and electronic access control. Our electricians respond to emergency and routine break and fix requests for the entire campus. They work with the telecom department and support their needs for pathway and power for all campus needs. All exterior lighting as well as irrigation pumps and emergency blue lights are maintained by the electrical shop. The electrical staff is the first response for trouble calls on the elevators on campus .

Environmental Management & Control Shop (EMCS)

The EMCS shops monitor and maintain the campus wide fire alarm network The Alerton building automation system (BAS) is operated and maintained by EMCS which is critical for the comfort and safety of building occupants as well as serving as a key component in managing the campus utility consumption. The control techs respond to routine and emergency hot and cold building calls campus wide. Another integral part of CWU’s energy management system is the ION enterprise utility metering network which is maintained and operated by both the CWU EMCS and Electrical shops.

Structural Shops

The Abatement Shop provides the expertise, including inspection and removal, to deal with asbestos and lead related hazards for the entire campus.

The Area/Carpenter Shop maintains the campus buildings from the roof down to the foundation including doors, cabinets, ceiling systems, wall systems, and minor repairs to campus building electrical and mechanical systems. The Area crew members respond to emergency trouble calls after hours as related to their areas of expertise.

The Paint and Floor Shops maintain all interior and exterior architectural finishes such as floor coverings and paint.

The Sign Shop provides repair and replacement of all traffic related signage on campus. They also provide and install interior and exterior building signage.

The Glass Shop provides and installs all new windows and mirrors and replaces broken windows and mirrors on campus.

Boiler House

The central heating and cooling plant runs on a 24/7 operation supplying all heating and cooling to buildings across campus. Boiler House MM2/Relief Operators work closely with the mechanical crew on the maintenance of the central heating and cooling plant and the operation and maintenance multiple satellite boilers located at individual buildings. In addition to operating the boilers, the boiler staff answers trouble telephone calls during off business hours and executes the call back procedure.

Mechanical Shop

The mechanical shop is responsible for the maintenance of the CWU underground potable water, hydronic water, sanitary sewer, high pressure steam, and storm drain systems and the natural gas distribution piping system downstream from the City meters. The mechanical crew is also responsible for the maintenance of the central heating and cooling plant and the operation and maintenance of multiple satellite boilers located at individual buildings. Our plumber pipe fitters respond to emergency and urgent call back situations to maintain the campus wide mechanical systems. The plumber pipe fitters are responsible for the installation and calibration of the campus wide condensate meters used to measure steam consumption at the building level. The plumber pipe fitters are certified by the State to test, maintain and repair the campus backflow devices which protect the City and CWU potable water distribution system. The welding shop is responsible for all of the certified welding performed by CWU crews on high pressure steam and other pipelines and structural welding on structures. The welder also supports FMD shops, dinning and housing staff with welding, fabrication and sheet metal work.

Fire Protection

Certified fire and life safety personnel are responsible for coordinating all maintenance, inspections and testing of water-based suppression, clean agent suppression, chemical suppression and fire alarm systems across campus. Certified contractors and staff perform all national, state, and locally required maintenance, inspections and testing on all fire protection systems. Qualified Custodial Maintenance staff from the Facilities Management Department manage all fire extinguishers throughout housing residence halls and academic facilities. Central Washington Universities Housing Department handles the installation and maintenance of fire extinguishers in apartments throughout campus. Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue performs an annual fire safety inspection of all campus facilities in addition to all inspections performed by CWU staff and certified contractors.
