Education Abroad
Faculty-Directed and Departmental Programs
Faculty-directed programs are short-term international study opportunities designed and led by CWU professors, in partnership with Education Abroad. They are a great option for first-year students, students who cannot study abroad on longer programs or for those who want a more structured experience with other CWU students.

Intercultural Communication in Japan is an intensive 2-week cultural immersion experience. Throughout the program, students will explore the rich culture, stunning natural beauty, and incredible history of Japan. The class will travel more than 500 miles from Tokyo to Hiroshima to gain insight into aspects of Japanese life - from educational contexts to domestic and professional ways of life.
-
Norway
- Ice Core Research (Tromsø) - Graduate Student Research
-
Peru
- Service Learning (Cusco, Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo, Maras) - ADMG 412
The Peru Service Learning Program offers students the chance to integrate academic study, intercultural exchange, and community engagement in one of the world’s most culturally and historically significant regions. Through faculty-led seminars, guided excursions, and hands-on service-learning projects, students develop both theoretical insight and practical experience.
The program emphasizes cultural understanding, sustainability, and leadership. Students engage directly with Peruvian communities in Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and surrounding rural areas. All activities align with the ITM 412 curriculum and support CWU’s Student Learning Outcomes.
A key focus is sustainability in action. Students learn about global environmental issues while contributing to community-based projects, such as installing solar panels, maintaining water systems, and supporting rural educational technology initiatives. These experiences build real-world skills in sustainable development and deepen intercultural awareness.
