Faculty-Directed and Departmental Programs
Faculty-directed programs are short-term international study opportunities designed and led by CWU professors, in partnership with Education Abroad. They are a great option for first-year students, students who cannot study abroad on longer programs or for those who want a more structured experience with other CWU students.

Mexico City
Mexico City: Art, Architecture + Design - ART 416
Winter Break: December 11-22, 2026
This course examines art, society, and culture in Mexico City and its surrounding areas from 0 CE to the present, with the fall quarter organized into pre-Columbian, colonial, and modern eras to highlight both enduring legacies and dynamic change. Students will explore major artistic trends and innovations while also preparing for international travel. A December trip to Mexico City will allow students to study art and architecture in person by visiting archaeological sites, museums, and religious buildings, while considering themes such as religion, race, class, gender, colonialism, nationalism, modernization, revolution, and trade. Coursework integrates primary and secondary readings with lectures, discussions, writing reflections, expert videos, and a creative travel journal with a capstone reflection to deepen understanding of Mexico City’s cultural and artistic production.

Japan
Japan: Intercultural Communication - COM 302
Winter Break: December 5-20, 2026
Intercultural Communication in Japan is an intensive 2-week cultural immersion experience. Throughout the program, students will explore the rich culture, stunning natural beauty, and incredible history of Japan. The class will travel more than 500 miles from Tokyo to Hiroshima to gain insight into aspects of Japanese life - from educational contexts to domestic and professional ways of life.
