Drop and Withdrawal Policy and Deadlines
Dropping/Withdrawing from a Course
It is the high school's responsibility to communicate with CWU CiHS when a student withdraws. When a student no longer in a CWU course in the high school, a withdrawal can be processed in the cihs.cwu.edu registration system by the teacher or counselor/reviewer.
Teachers submit a withdrawal request in cihs.cwu.edu upon a student's request.
A withdrawal or drop does not affect a student's CWU grade point average.
Be aware, withdrawing does not dismiss any class fees associated with the course. The charges will remain and the student or school will continue to receive invoices until the balance is paid.
Teachers, students and counselors need to communicate about a student's desire to withdraw. There are benefits and consequences, and support that is available if they are considering withdrawing because of poor grades.
Once a withdrawal is processed, it cannot be undone.
For a complete listing of important deadlines, please visit our Forms page, and see the deadlines for Semesters and Trimesters below.
Dropping a course:
Drops requested by the appropriate drop date removes the course from the student CWU transcript and fees will not be assessed. The drop deadline is very early in the term, usually the same date as the close of registration.
If a student needs to drop a course because they signed up for the wrong one, the Reviewer at your school can simply "Not Approve" that student for that class during the review process. If registration is still open and the review hasn't been done, then the student can delete the wrong course and add the correct one.
Uncontested withdrawal:
If the student took a portion of the class and then withdraws, they will receive a +W on their transcript. Fees still need to be paid if applicable. The uncontested withdrawal deadline is early in the course, less than halfway through.
Students may withdraw from just one or all classes before the Uncontested Withdrawal deadline.
Complete Withdrawal:
Students will be withdrawn from all classes at CWU. The student will receive a W on their transcript for all classes. Any applicable fees still need to be paid. The Complete Withdrawal deadline is late in the term, prior to finals.
Students may not Complete Withdraw from only one class late in the term, unless they are only registered in one class.
Hardship Withdrawal Petition:
Students may request to be withdrawn from one course (of several), late in the term, if they have experienced extenuating circumstances that present a true hardship and affect their ability to finish the course. They must petition the Registrar before this deadline, and include supporting documents such as medical notes. If approved, the student will receive a HW on their CWU transcript for the class. Applicable fees still need to be paid.
The Registrar does not consider poor grades to be a hardship out of the student's control.
An example would be a student is taking Math, PE, and English, and they broke their leg when they fell out of a tree while rescuing a kitten. They could be pulled from the PE class with a hardship withdrawal and maintain their enrollment in Math and English.

Dropping/Withdrawing from a course may be a difficult decision for a student
CWU CiHS can point the student or teacher to additional resources for tutoring, case management, library assistance and more that supports students in reaching their educational goals.
Students should consider some things before they withdraw from a course. Please encourage them to request academic advising.
