How to Participate
How to Participate
SOURCE is for everyone! This means students, faculty/staff, alumni, and of course our community members.
While it is focused on celebrating our students and their work, there are so many ways that everyone can participate. Attending, of course, is the easiest and best way to support our students, but there are also ways to be more involved with the event. Attendees can see a variety of presentations spanning across all disciplines, engage with activities and demonstrations, listen in on panel discussions, and more!
Review our SOURCE Etiquette tips!
Six reasons to attend SOURCE (even if you aren't presenting!)
- Find out what your friends are doing: Even if you aren't presenting, you probably know someone who is. Have you been wondering what they are doing in that biology lab, or during rehearsal, or in the library, or what they've been building? Now is your chance to find out.
- Get inspired: Not sure what you want to major in, or pursue after you are done with school? Learn from your fellow students and alumni what kinds of things you can do.
- Learn something new: Students from all disciplines at CWU are presenting their research, creative activities, and scholarly work. Are you a biology major? Talk to someone in fashion design. Musician? Talk to an archaeologist. Find out what's going on across campus.
- Get credit: Many faculty require students in their courses to attend part of SOURCE and talk to presenters and have an assignment associated with SOURCE.
- Network: SOURCE includes alumni panels, judges who are professionals in their field, keynote presenters, and sponsors from businesses and non-profits around the state. There are lots of opportunities to talk with these folks and learn more about career opportunities.
- Engage with Campus Community: Stay tuned…

Faculty/Staff

Incorporating SOURCE into your Teaching
- We encourage faculty who teach courses during the spring quarter to incorporate SOURCE, and attending it, into your course schedule. If you have class on the day(s) of SOURCE, you can even bring your whole class to the event to view a session and experience SOURCE together. Many faculty members will even cancel class for the day to further encourage their students to attend SOURCE!
- Some ways to incorporate SOURCE into your course include:
- Have an assignment that requires SOURCE attendance. This could include taking notes or writing a summary/description of presentations they attended.
- Check out an example of a required assignment that you can modify for your class.
- Give credit or other encouragement for students to participate in SOURCE as volunteers.
-
Faculty Mentorship
Role of Mentors
- Mentors are required for every SOURCE participant to make sure that they have someone to assist them through their project and ensure that they are completing and following appropriate guidelines and procedures.
- Mentors are required to approve their mentee’s project and abstract/project description when they submit to present at SOURCE. Mentors’ names will be associated with their mentees’ projects in the program and throughout the event. This is a crucial step as abstracts will be published “as-is”.
How to Become a Mentor
- Advertise your mentorship to your classes or students you would like to mentor on a project. Students are encouraged to also come to you to request you as a mentor for their project.
- Fill out our Mentor Interest Form to let us know that you are interested in mentoring SOURCE projects! We are creating a list of potential mentors for students to browse and find the right person to connect with!
-
Attend Why to SOURCE
Why to SOURCE is an annual event aimed toward current and prospective faculty mentors embarking on their mentorship journey.
A panel of experienced SOURCE mentors, your colleagues, talk about how they work with and mentor their students, the mentorship process, and their collaboration with SOURCE. Directly followed by open Q&A, this event strives to educate and motivate prospective mentors to get you, and your students involved in SOURCE.
Alumni & Community

Want to share what you do? Be on a panel!
Many departments and programs invite groups of alumni to give panel presentations to current students about jobs and careers to show how their degree connects them to the workforce. If you are interested in talking to students about your job or career path, please contact us or a current faculty member in your degree department or program.
-
Want to support today's students in your field? Be a judge!
Judges assess student presentations (typically within their own field of study) and give feedback to the students. Judging gives you a chance to have in-depth conversations with students and support them in their development as scholars and professionals in their field.
If you are interested in judging, please volunteer to judge. Check out more info on judging and link to sign-up here. -
Want to see all the amazing students’ work around CWU at SOURCE? Attend SOURCE!
We invite all members of our community to attend SOURCE, including Ellensburg residents, parents and relatives of student presenters, and alumni.
What to expect: Students from all disciplines and all campuses participate in SOURCE. Take a look at programs from past events to see the huge variety of posters, oral presentations, creative performances, creative and constructed objects, and panel discussions. SOURCE includes well over 300 presentations covering nearly every topic and discipline that you can imagine. You can see a fashion show, engineering design products, results of experiments in our laboratories, literary analyses, music and dance performances, business case studies - all under one roof in one event.
Engage with the presentations: Student presenters are eager to talk to people about their work. All you need to do is ask questions! When we have our presentation website up, feel free to browse presentations and post comments/questions for the presenters to discuss.
