MPA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this an online program?

The MPA program is delivered 100% remotely. Classes are typically delivered through a combination of live (synchronous) scheduled sessions and non-live (asynchronous) online modules. Live class sessions are held through Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, or other similar video conferencing tool. Attendance at live scheduled class sessions is required.  However, you will be able to complete the entire program remotely no matter where you are located.

My undergraduate major is not in business. Can I still apply?

Yes, you can apply and seek conditional admission. Your admission would be conditional on the completion of the program prerequisites (see below).

What are the prerequisite courses for admission to the MPA program?

The program requires completion of an undergraduate-level intermediate accounting series and a foundation tax course. The content of the intermediate accounting series must be similar to ACCT 350, ACCT 351, and ACCT 352 at CWU. The content of the foundation tax course must be similar to ACCT 303 or ACCT 340 at CWU.

Please note that the intermediate accounting series and a tax foundation course typically have their own prerequisites. For example, a student completing the intermediate accounting series or a tax foundation course at CWU must first complete ACCT 251 and ACCT 252 with a grade of C or higher.

Is this a full-time or part-time program?

The MPA program can be completed either full-time (10-16 quarter credits) or part-time (2-9 quarter credits). Students may complete the program in as little as four quarters (one year) or as long as six years from the date of first enrollment. This means that a student could take as little as one course per quarter.

What is the due date for applications and when can I start?

We accept applications on a rolling basis. Therefore, there is no application deadline and you may start in any quarter. However, you are strongly encouraged to apply as early as you can.

How long do I have to complete this program?

All courses used toward the MPA, including courses transferred in from other institutions, must have been completed within six years of the date of graduate degree conferral.

I already started a master's degree at another institution. Can I transfer credits?

Subject to the approval of the accounting department chair and the CWU School of Graduate Studies and Research, students may transfer up to 9 quarter credits (6 semester credits) into the MPA program provided that all of the following conditions are met:

  • The credits sought for transfer were graded “B” or higher.
  • The credits were taken from an accredited institution offering graduate degrees.
  • The credits were taken for classes the content of which is comparable to a core or elective course in the MPA program at CWU.
  • The credits were completed no more than six years before you intend to complete the MPA program at CWU.

What is the tuition for the Master of Professional Accountancy (MPA)?

Tuition and Fees are published on the webpage of the Office of the Registrar. Tuition and Fees are different for Resident (pdf) and Non-resident (pdf) students. However, eligible non-resident students may qualify for a waiver to reduce non-resident tuition rates. To determine whether you are a resident or non-resident student for tuition purposes you may contact the Office of the Registrar. To determine whether you qualify for the non-resident waiver you may contact the Scholarship Office

Are scholarships, graduate assistantships, or other financial aid available?

Yes! Numerous forms of financial assistance are available, including scholarships, graduate assistantships, and tuition waivers. You can view the full list of available financial assistance on the Graduate Student Funding webpage.
