ResNet Jail
Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing consumes a significant amount of bandwidth. In order to reduce bandwidth bottlenecks, P2P software is not permitted on ResNet. Be aware that the wireless on campus, even for academic buildings and the SURC, is routed through the ResNet network. It will catch you if you are downloading P2P files, and your internet connection may be suspended for a week or more.
P2P software is able to open and run on its own, turning your computer into a host and uploading files without your knowledge. Many of these programs can be difficult to remove and must be removed manually to ensure that they are uninstalled completely. Not having it installed on your computer is the safest option.
Penalties
- 1st offense: The user's internet access will be disabled for one week.
- 2nd offense: The user's internet access will be disabled for two weeks.
- 3rd offense: The user's internet access will be disabled until the student schedules a judicial review with Student Affairs for potential disciplinary action.
DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act): If CWU receives notice from the authorized agent of a copyright holder regarding any copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property infringement, it will result in an automatic third offense.
Penalties apply to student's personal devices registered with ResNet. Student will still be able to log into any CWU computer.
Remediation Quiz
You can lower your number of days in jail by taking the ResNet P2P Remediation Quiz one time only for a first or second degree offense. Students with a third violation are ineligible to take the quiz. To take the quiz, simply open your web browser. When you are redirected to the jail page, scroll to the bottom and look for the link to the quiz. We recommend that you remove any P2P software to avoid being quarantined again.
P2P Software Removal
The Acceptable Use Policy specifically states that you are responsible for the software on your computer. This includes software that you know and do not know is running. We recommend that you remove any P2P software to avoid being quarantined. Many of these programs can be difficult to remove and must be removed manually to ensure that they are uninstalled completely.
