Insurance and Billing

Charges

Basic Clinic Fee

The Student Medical and Counseling Fee, which appears on the student's quarterly tuition bill, helps cover the operational costs of the clinic.  If for some reason the student has not been charged the fee, the fee will be charged to the student's account at the time of their first visit.

Additional Services Fee

All office visits, medical procedures, diagnostic tests, and treatments are billed to students’ insurance company. All copays, deductibles, coinsurance, and balances after insurance for covered services are covered by the Student Medical and Counseling Fee and you will not receive a bill.

  • Express STI Clinic appointments are FREE for all students and not billed to insurance.

Non-covered Services

All services deemed not medically necessary or not covered by insurance are the sole responsibility of the student. Student Health Services will provide a Good Faith Estimate in writing to students prior to receiving non-covered services and will need to sign the form accepting responsibility for the charges to receive the services. Non-covered services will be billed to the student’s account.

  • We do not require payment at the time of services. You will not receive a bill in the mail.
  • For your privacy, all SHS charges will appear on your student account as "Student Health Services."

Non-Insured Students

Students who do not have medical insurance can call the Student Medical Clinic and request an appointment with one of our staff who are Certified HealthPlanFinder Navigators and can help students apply for free health insurance under WA Apple Health. For those that do not qualify your services* will be covered by the Student Medical and Counseling Fee.

*For non-covered services not typically covered by insurance, a Good Faith Estimate will
be provided to the student in advance.

No Show Fee

Students who do not show up for their scheduled appointment will be charged a $25 no show fee to their student account. We give a 10-minute grace period on appointments. After 10 minutes and/or no call the appointment is canceled, and the no show fee is charged to the student account.

Insurance

The Student Medical Clinic bills most major health insurance plans. Our office will file claims to your insurer if we have all the required documents on file. Students are encouraged to provide their valid health insurance information at the time of registration and check-in to facilitate the billing process.

  • How can I get help paying for medical care?

The Washington Health Benefit Exchange, effectively provides for both public and private insurance options, facilitates enrollment and provides an online marketplace for students to compare low-cost medical insurance options. In Washington State, this includes expanded Medicaid eligibility and tax credits to offset health insurance costs.

Here are some things to consider as you evaluate your health insurance options.

    • If you play sports, CWU requires that you have insurance coverage.
    • All CWU international students are required to have health insurance that meets CWU’s minimum requirements.
    • You may qualify for special enrollment options if you experience a qualifying life event or are eligible for Medicaid.
    • If you are not a resident of Washington, please visit your home state exchange website, or HealthCare.gov to learn about your insurance options.
