About Us

Department Mission:

We are a dedicated group of teaching/artist/scholars who closely mentor our students’ learning as they develop collaborative artistic skills and techniques, connecting art with life as engaged members of society.

Department Shared Values:

Inclusion/equity/diversity

We value anti-racist and inclusive practices in our art and life. These practices honor intersectional identities, which include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, body size, neurodiversity and disability.

Collaboration

We value open communication based in shared decision-making, mutual trust, respectful dialogue, and holding space for difficult conversations with each other toward an original creation.

Safety/wellness

We value life/work balance, safety, wellness, and consent-based methods in our practice, our laboratory spaces, and our habits to create resiliency and build skill sets to succeed academically and professionally.

Public Practice

We value public engagement and community building through process as product, interdisciplinary approaches, and social justice.

Inquiry & Curiosity: Process as Outcome

We value artistic and scholarly exploration and critical reflection as individuals and ensembles as part of the creative and learning process to develop on-going curiosity and life-long learning.

Respect

We value contemplation, continuous assessment and adaptation as necessary components of learning and improvement.

Well-rounded education

We value guided experience, skill acquisition, critical and creative thinking, and problem solving across diverse areas of knowledge as part of cultivating a holistic student learning experience.
