High Incidence, Inclusion Special Education Endorsement Minor Program
The High Incidence, Inclusion Special Education (HII SPED) minor program prepares K-12 general educators to include learners with high-incidence (more common) exceptionalities into their general education classes. Teacher candidates who enroll in this program will teach a core content area, such as elementary education, early childhood education, math, science, English language arts or social studies/history, and know how to best engage and support learners with high-incidence exceptionalities in their classes.
The High-Incidence Inclusion Special Education minor leads to an add-on endorsement in Special Education K-12.
Program Highlights
- Find a full-time teaching position in any district in Washington, because Special Education is the area of greatest demand for educators in Washington State, the US and abroad
- Eligible for Special Education certificate/ initial license in Washington State
- Confidence to work with learners with exceptionalities in a productive and effective manner
- Preparation to identify and support learners with high-incidence (common) exceptionalities into your general education classroom
- Practical knowledge and instructional development though interactive and hands-on learning and field experiences
- Thorough preparation for beginning educators to work well with behavior management, team collaboration, teaching to individual strengths and needs, and contributing to Individual Education Plans
- Knowledgeable and experienced faculty who focus on engagement, quality learning and positive learning environments
- Integration of authentic materials, field experiences and technology into every course
- Classes are in-person in Ellensburg or online & distance ed in our CWU Centers

- EDSE 422 Teaching Strategies, Curriculum, and Materials for Students with Disabilities (5 credits)
- EDSE 423 Instructional Practices & Strategies in Literacy & Math for Students with High Incidence Disabilities (4 credits)
- EDSE 431 Individualized Educational Program for Students with Disabilities (4 credits)
- EDSE 460 Collaboration with Parents, Paraprofessionals, and Community Agencies (4 credits)

Program Requirements
To be enrolled in the HII SPED Endorsable Minor Program, you will need to do the following:
- Meet with an advisor (see contact information below)
- Enroll in a major program that results in an endorsement, such as Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, or Secondary Education (English, History, Math, Science, Music, etc.)
- Become admitted to Teacher Certification
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher for the last 45 credits
- Must earn a minimum grade of “C” in all required major and minor courses
