CWU Summer Literacy for Youth in Music (SLYM)


About the 2026 Camp

June 15 – June 26, 2026

9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (June 19th will be off for Juneteenth)

There will be two programs running under SLYM this year, Music Literacy & Chamber Music.

SLYM is a two-week summer music intensive experience for pre-college students taught by CWU music students and mentored by CWU music faculty and peer mentors. Sessions include songwriting, ensembles, music reading, world music, and instrumental group lessons. We want to show and pass on that every young person deserves to interact with music.

  • Music Literacy Program is open to all children entering Grades 2 - 12. Students will be placed in personalized classes designed to meet their level and age.
  • Chamber Music Program is open to wind, string or piano students with a minimum of 2 years of lessons or enrollment in a school ensemble program.

Tuition

  •  $350 (includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, instrument usage, supplies)

Camp Curriculum

  • Art of Practice
    The camp will start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 3:00 pm, starting and ending with CWU student-guided practice sessions. 
  • Choir
    All participants will be placed in a choir to learn how to read, sing, and listen harmonically.
  • Chamber Music
    Participants will be placed in groups based on playing level and experience. A CWU music major will coach and play in the group. Each group will perform in the final concert on June 26.  
  • Group Instrumental Classes
    Participants in the Literacy program will choose from piano, recorder, ukulele and learn how to read, play, and improvise.
  • Special Classes
    All participants in both Chamber and Literacy programs will choose either Song Writing or World Music to deepen their musicianship and knowledge
  • Public Performance
    June 26. 2:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall, CWU Music Department

  • 10:50 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. Group Activity 
  • 11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Class Block 2
  • 12:00 p.m. - 12:45 p.m. Lunch
  • 12:50 p.m. - 1:05 p.m. Group Activity
  • 1:10 p.m. - 1:40 p.m. Special class 
  • 1:45 p.m. - 2:05 p.m. Group Activity and afternoon snacks 
  • 2:10 p.m.- 2:45 p.m. Afternoon practice
  • 2:50 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Closing Activity and Announcements
  • 3:00 p.m.: Parent Pick up

Check in & out 

Given the age of the students participating in this camp, check-in and check-out is required each morning during the entire duration of the camp. A desk will be set up at the Jerilyn S. McIntyre Music Building rotunda with a list of who have permission to check in/check out.
