Family Science is the interdisciplinary study of families and close interpersonal relationships. With a focus on family dynamics, parenting, human development, and social policies, you will gain valuable insights into the various factors that impact family life in our Family Science Specialization.

Why Study Family Science at CWU?


Our program’s strong foundation in both theory and practice prepares you to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

Students who complete a specialization in Family Science at CWU qualify to apply for the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) credential through the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). CWU has the only CFLE approved Family Science program in Washington State.

Students enrolled in the program are required to complete a Multi-term Practicum or Internship in an agency suited to their professional goals and interests.

Graduates of the Family Science Specialization are prepared for a variety of careers in fields that involve working with families, children, and communities.

  • Social Services: Consider a career as social workers, case manager, or program coordinator in child welfare agencies, mental health clinics, and community-based organizations.
  • Education: Have you thought about teaching? You can work as an early childhood educator, family engagement specialist, or paraeducator.
  • Family Life Educator: Provide psychoeducation and facilitate support groups in areas such as relationship education, parenting education, and grief and loss.
