Practicum Opportunities

All students majoring in a Child Development and Family Science program will engage in a multi-quarter practicum experience, for a total of at least 360 hours. Students will enroll in CDFS 492/592: Child Development and Famliy Science Practicum for a total of 12 credits. While enrolled in practicum, students will intern at an organization that serves children or families at which they can apply what they have learned in the classroom to practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the practicum expereince, students will be able to:

  • Practice skills in communication and interaction with children and/or families as they directly interact with children and/families at their practicum site.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior in a work environment.
  • Apply skills they have developed in Child Development and Family Science courses at their practicum site.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of community resources, agencies, and organizations.
  • Evaluate their progress toward goals and professional development in their practicum experience.
  • Analyze experiences at their practicum site and design programs or interventions to address unmet needs at their site.

Practicum Sites

Once enrolled in the practicum course, students will have access to a database of pracitcum sites with detailed descriptions and contact information. Students will then work with the practicum instructor to determine an appropriate site given students' individual career goals. Students may choose to work with the instructor to establish a partnership with a new organization, or they may complete their practicum at one of our established sites.
