Accessibility and Disability Studies

Student Club

UN Symbol of AccessibilityThe Accessibility and Disability Club is an online group dedicated to empowering students of all abilities and neurotypes through peer support and education. We welcome members of the disability community, allies, and all who want to join an inclusive club that promotes awareness and disability pride at CWU. In partnership with the Accessibility and Disability Studies Program, we aim to develop our advocacy skills and combat stigma towards the disability community. Together, we strive to create an environment where every student can thrive and achieve their fullest potential.

  • What we care about

Members of the Accessibility and Disability Club are passionate about building a space for self-advocacy and intersectional coalition building. The disability community is diverse, and ADC aims to do work that promotes the voices of people of color, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and individuals from other marginalized backgrounds. ASC strives for an environment that is accessible to people with physical, developmental, psychiatric, intellectual, and sensory disabilities, whether visible or invisible. Non-disabled friends, allies, professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about accessibility or the disability community are strongly encouraged to join, and members are never expected to disclose their disability status.

  • What we do
    • Play games, share interests, and connect with an accepting group of peers.
    • Make action plans to address physical and social barriers to access on CWU campus.
    • Discuss topics introduced in Accessibility and Disability Studies curriculum.
    • Host guest speakers to share their experiences advocating for accessibility in their careers.
    • Collaborate with other disability organizations, such as the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Wise, and CWU's Disability Services.
    • Show movies that celebrate the accomplishments and culture of the disability community.
    • Honor disabled people lost to filicide through awareness campaigns and Disability Day of Mourning vigils.
    • Encourage members to present at CWU's Symposium of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE).
