Student Club Opportunities


As a student in the College of Arts and Humanities, you will be exposed to inspiring professors, innovative programs, friendly classmates, and a wealth of academic and social opportunities. Many of these opportunities are listed here along with information about awards and other resources that you may find useful.

Student Organizations and Clubs

  • Art + Design
    Student Art Club (SAC)

    All art + design students have membership. This organization hosts regular exhibitions of student art, plans, and sponsors attendance at local, regional, and national art events.

  • Communication
    PRSSA

    Public Relations Student Society of America allows students to network with professionals and gain experience in the field of public relations. See PRSSA

    Lambda Pi Eta

    Students with high academic success and commitment to service are invited to join the student honor society. Lambda Pi Eta cultivates professional development, expands networking opportunities, and encourages preparation for graduate school. See Lambda Pi Eta

    CCA

    CCA is CWU's PRSSA affiliated student-managed public relations agency. CCA will strategically match a client with a student team, under the guidance of a professional faculty adviser. See Central Communication Agency.

    The Observer

    Contributing to the content of CWU’s award-winning weekly student-run newspaper allows students to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting and a portfolio of journalistic work. See The Observer.

    PULSE

    CWU’s award-winning bi-quarterly gives students an opportunity to write features and other articles for a nationally recognized student-led lifestyle magazine. See PULSE.

    Central News Watch

    Central News Watch is the only local television news program out of Ellensburg and it is both directed and produced by students.

    Wildcat Films

    Wildcat Films is a student-run production house that provides video production services for various clients around campus including departments, colleges, and clubs. It is run entirely by students and provides them the experience of filmmaking and skills in client relations, budgeting, and contract negotiation.

    KCWU-FM

    KCWU-FM, also known as 88.1 The ’Burg, is as an out-of-classroom learning laboratory utilizing a real-world broadcast environment to foster lifelong communication, public speaking, workplace accountability, teamwork, and leadership skills important for successful citizenship and success in any chosen career.

  • World Languages and Cultures
    Namakemono Japanese Animation (Anime Club)

    The Namakemono Japanese Animation (Anime) Club exposes its members and their guests to Japanese culture through various forms of media. They meet every Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. For further information visit the website.

    American Sign Language Club (ASL)

    The ASL Club was formed by ASL students as a social organization. This club provides our students the opportunity to enhance and maintain their ASL skills by mingling.

    German Stammtisch

    German Stammtisch meets every Tuesday at 3:00pm in L&L 106. German conversation, interesting topics and activities, and food. Club president is Rachael West.

    Russian Club

    The Russian club meets to allow its members to speak Russian, sing, cook, drink, and discuss politics, history, and religion in an intense - but friendly - atmosphere outside of the normal classroom environment.

  • English
    English Graduate Student Association (EGSA)

    The English Graduate Student Association (EGSA) serves the social and academic needs of the English graduate student community. Through guest speakers, regular meetings, evenings out, sponsored readings, and other creative activities, the EGSA supports student participation in the English Department, extra-curricular events, and career-building opportunities in order to create a fun and healthy learning environment.

    Manastash

    Manastash, though not a club, is the Student Literary Journal of Central Washington University. All students at CWU are eligible to submit their original poetry, fiction, drama, and creative nonfiction for consideration of publication. Submissions are evaluated by a panel of student editors. Selected materials are published yearly during spring quarter. Copies of the journal are free and are distributed across campus. In conjunction with the publication, students whose works are published in Manastash are invited to present their works in a reading sponsored by the English Department.

    Inklings Creative Writers Club

    The Inklings Creative Writers Club is for Students interested in Fiction Writing, Poetry, Non-Fiction Writing, Playwriting, Screenwriting, or Journalism. Students hang out with other writers. Join peer-edit groups in their field and go to writing seminars and festivals.

  • History
    History Club

    In the past few years, the History Club has sponsored talks in which faculty members discuss their diverse paths to academia; sponsored booths at Boo Central (a Halloween event for local children); toured the historic city of Roslyn; and, after much fundraising in 2004-05, traveled to Washington, D.C., and to Gettysburg National Battlefield. Those are just a few of the History Club's activities; it has been among the most active clubs on campus. See History Club.

  • Music

    Local Chapters of National Organizations

    WMEA

    Music Educators National Conference student chapter--comprised of Music Education majors-- is and has been the largest student chapter in the state and region. The club holds monthly meetings with guest presenters, generates funds through a weekly bake and coffee sale, and helps send student members to state, regional, and national annual MENC conferences.     IAJE

    International Association of Jazz Educators is comprised of students with an interest in performing and teaching Jazz. Sponsors a quarterly Jazz Combo concert and weekly jam sessions at the TAV, and trips to jazz venues in Seattle. Generates funds by holding weekly pizza lunch sales, and helps support members' attendance at IAJE national conference.

    ACDA

    American Choral Directors Association—comprised of students interested in pursuing competencies in choral directing. See ACDA.

    ASTA

    American String Teachers Association—comprised of string students, especially those interested in teaching. Supports the activities of the students involved in the Preparatory string program, and has secured grants to support string education. See ASTA.

    PAS

    Percussive Arts Society. Comprised percussion majors on campus. Travels to and participates in annual regional PAS meetings. See PAS.

    Music LLC

    (Two) – largest on campus, two units, one for upper-division students, one for entering freshmen, Mark Goodenberger, advisor.

    Trumpet Club

    Comprised of members of the trumpet studio in the department. Supports annual Trumpet Day with logistical and administrative support, and annual trips for some of its members to national competitions.

    Trombone Club

    Comprised of members of the trombone studio on campus. Generates funds with annual Trombone "Carolgrams" at Christmas. Supports the annual Trombone Festival day, and members' trips to the national trombone society convention.

  • Philosophy and Religious Studies
    Phi Sigma Tau

    Central Washington University is home to the Washington Alpha Chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the International Philosophy Honor Society. The purpose of Phi Sigma Tau is to serve as a means to award distinction to students with high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy, to promote student interest in research and advanced study in the field, to provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit, to encourage a professional spirit and friendship among those who have displayed marked ability in the field, and to popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public.     Philosophy and Religious Studies Club

    The Philosophy and Religious Studies Club at Central Washington University is an active group that participates in a variety of activities. At the heart of the club are weekly meetings, during which members read and discuss in-depth any number of historical or contemporary writers of philosophical and religious significance. While many members are Philosophy and Religious Studies majors and minors, the club also includes a large number of non-majors/minors who have an active interest in philosophy and religious studies.   • Theatre Arts
    CTC

    Central Theatre Club is open to any student with an interest in or a love of theatre. The club engages in several annual fundraisers, including concession sales in tandem with USITT, in order to support student involvement in regional theatre productions and conferences.

    USITT

    United States Institute for Theatre Technology is a local chapter of the national organization currently working toward national recognition. The club engages in several annual fundraisers, including concession sales in tandem with CTC, in order to support student involvement in regional theatre productions and regional and national conferences.
