X. Cooperative Education and Internships

Please note that Career Services made important changes in the Learning Agreement process for Internships, beginning Fall Quarter 2016.

Students and Faculty should be familiar with university policy regarding Practicum (XX 492) and Cooperative Education (XX #90) and their differences.  University Policy and Procedures regarding Internship and Practicum are found here: CWUP 5-50-060(1) Curriculum Rules for Implementation and CWUR 2-50-060 sections 1 and 2.

As a College, the following practice should be followed:

Practicums

Field experiences, involving the supervised practical application of previously studied theory, which is supervised by CWU faculty on campus, or through online course work, should enroll students in Practicum (XX 492).

Scheduling

Practicum courses should be listed on quarterly schedules as placeholders, where students then complete an Arranged Course Form in order to enroll.

Internships

Field experiences, involving the practical application of previously studied theory, supervised by an on-site supervisor (often off-campus), and an on-campus faculty advisor, should enroll students in Cooperative Education/Internship (XX #90).

Scheduling

Cooperative Education/Internship courses should be listed on quarterly schedules as placeholders, where students then complete a Learning Agreements and Internship Release Form through Career Services in order to enroll.

Prior to starting their internships, all students will be required to purchase professional liability insurance either at the cashier’s office. Students also must complete the Online Sexual Harassment and Employment Discrimination Training through CWU's Human Resources Department. They must print the proof of insurance and the certificate of training completion and attach them to the Student Release Form included in the Learning Agreement.

The CAH Dean's office will be supporting the policy that the completed forms must be submitted to Career Services for registration at least one week prior to the CWU quarterly add/drop deadline; this includes all required signatures. Learning Agreements cannot be backdated. A student should not be onsite working without a completed Learning Agreement.

All forms and information about Cooperative Education and Internships can be found on the Carrer Services website.
