IX. Enrollment and Class Size
The College of Arts and Humanities uses CWU Academic Life Policy (CWUP 2-20-030, reproduced below) as a standard for determining enrollment levels:
Class-Size
1. Course enrollment limits are determined by a number of factors including (1) the maximum number of students in which a high level of student learning can take place, (2) instructional method (format) and mode, (3) the available seats or workstations in a classroom, (4) other factors such as limits set for accreditation, safety, etc.
2. Classes offered in traditional classrooms with fewer enrollments than that listed below may be offered only with the approval of the appropriate college dean or canceled.
Level Enrollment
100-200 - 20
300-400 - 12
Graduate - 8
3. Allowable exceptions are:
- The course is required for graduation and suitable substitutions cannot be made for students.
- The course is required in a major and must be offered in the current quarter to keep proper course sequence.
- The course is in a newly established degree program, concentration, or support area or is required to maintain accreditation.
- Cross-listed or undergraduate/graduate courses are taught as a single class by the same faculty at the same time.
- The first-time offering of the course.
Teaching Reassignment
Instructors of classes canceled due to low enrollment will be reassigned to another course, preferably one offered in the same quarter as the canceled class. If the instructor cannot be reassigned to teach during the same quarter as the canceled class, the reassignment should occur within the academic year.
