Active Learning Classrooms - SAM 129 or 131
Active learning instruction, defined as a practice that “engages students in the process of learning through activities and/or discussion in class, as opposed to passively listening to an expert,” is known to be more effective than traditional lecturing for student learning. Multimodal Learning’s (MML) Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are reserved for faculty who will use them as a teaching laboratory to expand their pedagogical skill-set and enhance student learning.
We encourage students, faculty, and staff to take full advantage of the resources the Multimodal Learning Department provides including the Active Learning Classrooms (Samuelson 129 & 131) Below is a general Room Use Policy and request process for these unique learning environments:
Submit the Active Learning Classroom Request Form
Active Learning Classroom Use Policy
Requests for individual class or instructional sessions will be reviewed and scheduled for ALCs on a case-by-case basis, pending space availability.
- Requests for these rooms are based primarily on pedagogical development. Priority is given to pedagogy that requires the unique technology and capabilities of the ALCs.
- Classrooms have a set maximum class size of 35; no exceptions.
- Reservations may only be made for the current term and following term and may not exceed one term in length. Exceptions may be made for campus units and special meetings.
- Approximately 3-4 weeks prior to a quarter’s start, instructors will have the opportunity to email MML to request an ALC.
- Use of an ALC in prior quarters does not necessarily give priority for future use.
- Instructors/ Facilitators agree to take part in a technology consultation and training session at least one week prior to first class date.
- Tech support may be available during MML’s normal office hours, 9AM – 5PM, but cannot be guaranteed unless you schedule with a staff member.
