Getting around CWU and Ellensburg doesn't have to mean driving. From OPR's free bike share and bike friendly campus resources to free public transit, there are several sustainable ways to get where you need to go.

Biking at CWU

Whether you bike to campus every day or are just getting started, CWU has resources to make biking easier. 

Bike Share Program 

Need a bike to get to class, grab lunch, or explore Ellensburg? CWU’s free Bike Share program makes it easy to get moving without bringing your own bike. Created through the Student Green Fund, the program lets students check out a bike through Outdoor Pursuits & Rentals (OPR) for up to a week. Each bike comes with a helmet, light, lock and bell and if no one is waiting, you can check it out again at the end of your week.

Each May, CWU celebrates Bike Month with events that encourage the campus community to choose biking as a way to get to and around campus.

Public Transit

Skip the drive and explore Ellensburg and beyond with local and regional public transportation options.

Getting around Ellensburg:

Central Transit

Central Transit is a fare-free, 7-day-a-week (except holidays) public transit service provided by the City of Ellensburg, with support from Central Washington University and HopeSource. All buses feature wheelchair accessibility and bicycle racks.

Regional transportation:

  • Flixbus - the Flixbus stops on E 10th Ave, directly north of the Starbucks, and has routes to Spokane, Snoqualmie Pass, Seattle, and Tacoma.
  • Yakima-Ellensburg Commuter - This traditional commuter bus travels from Yakima to Ellensburg several times a day and stops at Safeway near CWU.
  • Greyhound - Bus routes to several cities from Love's truck stop in Ellensburg (approximately 3 miles from CWU).
  • Bellair Airporter - This small bus travels from Yakima to SeaTac daily and picks up at Starbucks on E 10th Ave.
