Online Bicycle Registration

The increasing popularity of bicycling as a sport, and an affordable means of transportation, has made bicycles an easy target for thieves. Bicycle theft is can be even bigger problem on college campuses.

What is the bicycle registration program?

The purpose of the program is to document an owner's bicycle information to help them protect their property and assist with law enforcement agencies should an owner lose their bike or become a victim of theft.

The bicycle registration program is a way of collecting bike information (the owner's identification, along with the brand, model, serial number, and color of the bicycle). Once information is collected, it is entered into the police database and a registration sticker is affixed to the bike.

Why should I register my bicycle?

Individuals are encouraged to register their bikes to help deter theft and to assist officers should an owner's bicycle be stolen or lost. If stolen and recovered registered bikes are more likely to be returned to their owners. The University Police recommends only using U-bolt type bike locks. Cable and chain locks are easy to cut and U-bolt locks are an extra deterrent to bike theft.

The bicycle registration information is kept on file so even if an owner graduates or moves, the University Police Department will still be able to provide ownership information on the bicycle. Additionally, if the bicycle with the registration sticker is located by another enforcement agency anywhere in the U.S., they can contact University Police and the owner can be identified.

How do I register my bicycle?

Any individual (student, staff, faculty, community members) can register their bicycle. Individuals can register in two ways:

  1. By stopping by the University Police Department at the Public Safety Building, located in the O-5 parking lot, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm and completing the bicycle registration form.
  2. By completing the following form online and submitting it to the University Police Department via email or printing off the form and dropping it off in person. If you complete the Online Bicycle Registration form you will still need to stop by to pick up your bicycle registration sticker.

Where is the Serial Number located?

The serial number is generally stamped onto the bicycle frame. See the below referenced picture for possible locations of your bike's serial number.
