Transferring YVC credit to CWU

If you're planning to transfer from Yakima Valley College to Central Washington University, you’re in good company! YVC sends more transfer students to CWU than any other college! This page was designed with YVC students in mind, providing planning tools, key connections at both institutions, and a host of other resources.

Just follow four easy steps!

  • STEP 1: Select YVC courses and degrees

YVC offers a variety of associate's degrees, including several different kinds of transfer degrees.

    • The most universally applicable is the AA-DTA, which satisfies all of CWU's general education requirements and provides you with junior standing when you begin with CWU.  Other degrees may serve transfer students well, depending on their circumstances.
    • AA-DTA/MRP in Business - this degree will have you ready for CWU's College of Business
    • Associate of Science - this math- and science-focused degree can be an excellent preparation for a variety of STEM fields.
    • Associate of Applied Science - this career-focused degree transitions effectively into CWU BAS programs.
    • You can also transfer to CWU without an associate's degree.  Admissions is guaranteed if you have earned 40 transferable credits and at least a 2.5 GPA.

To see specific YVC courses that satisfy CWU General Education Requirements, see this list.

Yakima Valley College Counseling and Advising offers academic advising, career planning, and personal counseling.  While you are at YVC, it's a good practice to check in with your advisor regularly!

  • STEP 2: Make academic plans for CWU while you're at YVC

Staff at both YVC and CWU want to help you make an efficient plan to meet your goals. It's sometimes important to collaborate with advisors and others at both places!

    Academic Planning Resources

Do you have a specific major in mind? Our Transfer MAPs are a planning guide designed for you to learn about your intended major and get answers to critical questions you might have.  We are continually creating new Transfer MAPs. If you don't see your major listed, contact us by email.

Where do you want to complete your Bachelor’s degree? You can explore the options below:

    General Education Considerations

    • Any YVC degree with the "DTA" designation satisfies all of CWU’s general education requirements.
    • The Associate in Science satisfies most general education but you will still do a few humanities & social science classes after transfer.
    • The Associate of Applied Science includes some general education but you will still have a significant number after transfer.
    • You can also transfer without an associate’s degree (if you have 40+ credits and a 2.5 GPA, your admissions is guaranteed). Each course is translated into CWU course numbers using our Transfer Equivalency Site and then counted toward each relevant general education requirement.  This list shows frequently taken YVC courses that satisfy CWU general education requirements - if you're not earning a full associate's degree, this is a very helpful resource.

  • STEP 3: Plan how to pay for your education

Paying for college can be one of the toughest parts of earning your degree - but it doesn't have to be.  Both YVC and CWU are here to help you obtain financial aid to accomplish your goals and fulfill your dreams.

  • STEP 4: Apply to CWU - for free!

Students enrolled at Yakima Valley College or in YVC courses in their local high schools can apply to CWU for free!

    1. Get ahold of your YVC transcripts (official or unofficial)
    2. Apply to CWU
    3. When you're filling out your application, under the Application Fee tab indicate that you have an application fee waiver and select YVC/YSD Regional Partnership from the dropdown menu
    4. Upload your YVC transcript or a photo of your YVC ID

We offer rolling admission for all four quarters of the year, but we recommend applying a couple of quarters ahead of time.  If you have fewer than 60 credits earned, Early Transfer Admission+ is an excellent option!

Getting specialized information and support

Are you in high school while taking YVC classes?

Whether you are taking YVC classes on campus at YVC or at your high school, you can easily transfer that credit to CWU. If you're completing an AA-DTA, then all of your CWU general education will be considered complete, and you'll begin as an academic junior, although we will still have you attend Orientation with other students coming out of high school and you will either need to live on campus or successfully file for a housing exemption.

You can consult our list of commonly taken YVC courses that satisfy CWU specific general education requirements to identify great course options.  A lot of students also take Dual Credit CTE courses, and we've created a list of these courses that will transfer to CWU.

Who can help?  Talk to your Running Start counselor, your high school counselor, or Diana Borges for additional planning assistance.

Do you need to stay in the Yakima Valley?

You can stay on site at YVC to complete your CWU bachelor’s degree at CWU Yakima if you plan to major in Elementary Education or Interdisciplinary Studies- Social Sciences.

CWU also offers a variety of online majors that can be completed from anywhere!

Are you or your family members more comfortable speaking in Spanish?

Our Spanish-version admissions website may be helpful.
