Sociology, Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Program Description

BA in Sociology is available as 45 or 60 credits and students coming in with an AA-DTA can complete it in two years of full-time study. Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies and how people interact within these contexts. Since all human behavior is social, the subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious traditions; from the divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture. Students completing the 45-credit version must complete a second major or a minor.

Likely Career Paths

The Sociology major is an exciting discipline with expanding opportunities for a wide range of career paths. It is a valuable major for students planning careers in a variety of fields including social research, criminology, social psychology, public administration, gerontology, education, social work and market research. It provides a useful background for those planning to enter law, business, medicine, community planning, and politics.
