Beginning next week, the CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will be hosting the Department of Art + Design's 2023 Juried Undergraduate Student Art + Design Exhibition. An opening reception will be held Thursday, May 11, from 5-7 p.m., with a student awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m.
The annual exhibition is a showcase for outstanding undergraduate student work created during the past two years and is open to CWU students who have attended classes in the Department of Art + Design. The exhibit will remain on view through June 3.
This year's jurors, who select the artwork for the exhibit and assign several of the awards, are Mackenzie Loete and Kayo Nakamura. Loete ('16) is a lead print designer and project manager for Nordstrom Product Group in Seattle, while Nakamura joined the art faculty at Yakima Valley College last year, teaching a wide range of two-dimensional art classes, plus some three-dimensional design.
The 2023 Juried Undergraduate Student Art + Design Exhibition is made possible through the generosity of Ted ('62) and Louise Wiprud. Student awards have been generously donated by the following individuals and organizations: the Student Union Advisory Board, Ted and Louise Wiprud, Jane Orleman, President Jim Wohlpart and Sasha Wohlpart, Professor Emeritus Glen L. Bach, Professor Emerita Cynthia Krieble, Associate Professor Marcus DeSieno, Gallery One Visual Arts Center, PUNCH Projects, Associate Professor Justin Colt Beckman, Shane L. Johnson Illustration, Associate Professor Rachel H. Kirk, the Department of Art + Design, and the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery.
The Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall and is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. The gallery will be closed May 29 for the Memorial Day holiday.
