Anne Cubilié, the director of the William O. Douglas Honors College at CWU, has been named associate provost for faculty affairs and extended learning. She began the new role on August 1.

“I am continually impressed by the quality and dedication of the faculty, students, and staff at CWU and am honored and excited to have been selected for this position,” Cubilié said. “The university is unique in the state for its quality of education/cost ratio and I look forward to working with colleagues to enhance its already innovative and excellent programming.”

As associate provost, Cubilié oversees the departments of Extended Programs (Continuing Education and University Centers), Multimodal Learning, and the Registrar. She also will work with faculty to develop policies, procedures, and guidelines for academic and student issues.

“Anne Cubilié is an exceptional leader, who I’m convinced has the skills and integrity to pioneer this position, which will enhance shared governance, academic quality, and student success at Central Washington University,” said Marilyn A. Levine, provost/vice president for Academic and Student Life.

Cubilié came to CWU from the United Nations where she worked in humanitarian and development policy at UN headquarters and in the field. Prior to joining the United Nations, she was an assistant professor at Georgetown University. She has lived and worked in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Egypt, most recently as a visiting scholar as part of a joint United Nations/American University of Cairo program.

Cubilié maintains an interest in bridging the gap between academic research and the political and policy considerations of international aid. Her scholarship focuses on international women’s rights, conflict resolution, and violence mitigation. Her book, Women Witnessing Terror: Testimony and the Cultural Politics of Human Rights, addresses post-atrocity identity and ethical witnessing elaborated by women survivors of human rights abuse.

At CWU Cubilié is involved in the Women and Gender Studies Program and the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement. She earned her doctorate and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon.

Math Professor Dominic Klyve has been named interim director of the William O. Douglas Honors College while Cubilié becomes its executive director.
