A Central Washington University alumnus was named the new chief of the Selah Police Department last week, hoping to provide some stability after a series of changes at the top in the past six years.

Longtime department leader Michael “Mick” Gause (’08) was officially promoted from his lieutenant position on January 17, the department announced on its Facebook page.

“(Chief Gause) is a dedicated leader, whose life and career are deeply rooted in our community,” the department said.

Gause, who graduated from CWU with a degree in kinesiology and exercise science, began his law enforcement career with the Yakima County Jail and the Toppenish Police Department before joining the Selah Police Department (SPD) as an officer in 2014.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2021 and served in that role until August 2024, when he was elevated to lieutenant following the departure of former Chief Dan Christman, who took over the department in 2020. Former SPD Lieutenant Dustin Soptich succeeded Christman for 15 months before becoming chief of the Union Gap Police Department last October.

As lieutenant, Gause’s duties were expanded to include Internal Affairs, where he was responsible for ensuring the highest standards of professional conduct and accountability within the department.

In announcing Gause as its new chief, the SPD highlighted his vision to lead with integrity, transparency, and innovation.

“He is committed to strengthening community partnerships, supporting the men and women who serve, and ensuring proactive, ethical policing,” SPD said.
