This year marks 50 years since Brooks Library first opened its doors at Central Washington University, and 20 since the CWU Archives and Special Collections was officially established.
To celebrate half a century of learning, community, and exploration, CWU Libraries will be hosting a celebration on October 16 from 4-6 p.m. on the second floor of the library.
The event, titled “Stories from the Stacks: 50 Years of Brooks Library and 20 Years of the CWU Archives and Special Collections,” is free and open to the public, and will feature speeches from special guests, refreshments, tours, giveaways, and more.
Speakers will include CWU President Jim Wohlpart, Dean of Libraries Sydney Thompson, Professor and University Archivist Julia Stringfellow, and President of the Friends of Brooks Library Carol Findley, who is also the daughter of library namesake Jim Brooks and his wife Lillian.
Thompson says the event is intended to showcase just what a valuable resource a library can be for every member of the community.
“I hope attendees walk away with a sense of pride in what we’ve built together; not just the spaces and collections, but the teams and relationships that have helped generations of students and faculty succeed,” she said. “This event honors the many libraries employees, past and present, whose dedication, care, and expertise have made that success possible. More than anything, I want people to feel the truth that this library belongs to everyone, and that everyone’s story has a place here.”
Since stepping into the Dean of Libraries position in 2023, Thompson has seen growth anchored in an unwavering dedication to service and partnership.
“What stands out to me is the libraries’ steady commitment to serving the university community,” she said. “While our tools and spaces have changed over time, what hasn’t changed is our dedication to supporting students, faculty, and staff in meaningful, personal ways.”
Looking ahead, Thompson sees a future full of opportunities to deepen these vital connections with the community.
“Fifty years from now, I hope CWU Libraries will be able to look back and say we embraced change with creativity and collaboration,” she said. “I hope we will have continued to expand access to knowledge, technology, and opportunity in ways that respond to the needs of each new generation.”
Those interested in the event’s speakers can attend in person on the second floor of Brooks Library, or online via Zoom. Thompson hopes the occasion will serve to showcase all that it takes to make a library such a special place.
“Anniversaries like this are a reminder that libraries aren’t just about books; they’re about people,” she said. “For 50 years, the James E. Brooks Library has supported learning, connection, and community, and I know it will continue to do so for generations to come.”
