In past years, students in Katie Lawless’ Parent Engagement class at CWU have spent spring quarter hosting a series of play groups for local families, in order to strengthen their ability to communicate with parents and children alike.

This year, in response to a more robust series of similar local offerings, the events have been combined into one big celebration of engaged, creative play called Tots in Tune, scheduled for Friday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to noon in Black Hall 122.

The event will feature activities geared toward children ages 5 and under, though Lawless knows that parents who attend will get just as much out of it as their kids.

“Children will explore theater, dance, visual art, and music—experiences that may inspire a deep and lasting love for the arts,” the CWU School of Education lecturer said. “They’ll practice taking turns, following directions, and playing collaboratively with peers, while parents will have to opportunity to meet other parents and find new ways to support purposeful play at home.”

Most of the students in the class are majoring in early childhood education and stand to gain valuable experience from their interactions with the attendees.

“Students in this class are studying how to promote family engagement as future educators,” Lawless said. “This event offers hands-on experience in planning and facilitating family activities, engaging directly with parents and children, and observing and appreciating family dynamics.”

Lawless has enjoyed watching the impact the play groups have had in the lives of both students and families over the years.

“As the instructor and a member of the community, I love seeing families enjoying themselves and students gaining new respect for the work parents do,” she said. “This event always fosters a sense of goodwill between the university and the local community.”

Tots in Tune is free and open to families with young children looking for a fun, engaging way to fill a Friday morning. Interested families can RSVP or register at the door. Fifteen free parking passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. More information is available online.
