The all-time leading scorer in Central Washington University women's basketball history has capped her career with an All-American selection from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.
Senior guard Sunny Huerta received third team All-American honors after leading the Wildcats to their first-ever Sweet 16 appearance in the Division II National Tournament.
Huerta averaged 19.1 points per game and finished her college career with 1,960 points, good for second place in GNAC history.
“Sunny deserves to be recognized as one of the top 15 players in the country,” CWU head coach Randi Richardson said in an article on WildcatSports.com. “What she has accomplished as a Wildcat personally and from a team perspective is amazing. She's established herself as one of the all-time greats to ever wear a Wildcat uniform.”
Huerta also won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the year award earlier this month and earned a spot on the D2CCA All-Region first team. Teammate Asher Cai made the second team.
Huerta, a 5-foot-4 guard from Whittier, California, capped off her career as one of CWU's all-time greats, recording career-best numbers in points per game (19.1), rebounds (4.9), assists (121), and three-point percentage (46.2%). She also had 34 steals, a 44.7% shooting from the field and 83.9% from the free-throw line. She finished among the top 50 of eight different NCAA Division II statistical categories this season.
Central recorded at least 19 wins and reached the NCAA tournament in all four seasons of Huerta's career.
She holds 26 single-season top 10 marks and 16 career top-10 records, including: Most points in CWU history (1,960), most made field goals (714), highest career three-point percentage (42.5%), most games played (124), and most games started (116).
Huerta also holds the GNAC record for most points scored in a single game, putting up 46 against Walla Walla on Dec. 21, 2022.
