Dr. Milo Smith Theatre History Scholarship
Awarded to: A student who has demonstrated interest in the area of theatre history.
Nature of the Award: An award of $500, award presented to the student to be used for tuition, related to academic pursuits, or expenses related to future research in Theatre History
Procedure: Nomination and/or applications for the award can be made in writing by any student or faculty member which will be accompanied by written statements describing the achievement and appropriate goals of the nominee/applicant.
The Department scholarship committee shall consider all nominees/applicants to determine the recipient, based on stated criteria and university guidelines for eligibility.
Milo Smith, PhD, 1925-2012, CWU Distinguished Emeritus Faculty, served Central Washington University and the Theatre Arts Department for 34 years (1956-1989) as founder and chair of the department. He produced 55 shows, including Broadway musicals and operas, and initiated the first children's theatre tour at CWU. His vision and leadership as project manager and designer resulted in the 1980 construction of the department's black box theatre, which was officially named in his honor the Milo Smith Tower Theatre on Nov, 13, 2003. Dr. Smith and wife Helen continued to support the theatre department both as loyal patrons and contributors.
Born on February 13, 1925 in Spokane, Smith came to Central Washington College of Education in 1956, after earning his PhD at Stanford University and teaching speech and drama at Dallas (Oregon) High School. He remained on the faculty for 34 years, until his retirement in 1989.
