Summer Institute

Summer Institute - Training for All Partners

General information regarding the requirements for operating within the CiHS policy, managing a smooth registration processes, and on-boarding as new CWU Adjunct Instructors are among the helpful topics covered.

New instructors must attend Summer Institute (SI) for training before they can offer the CWU College in the High School classes at their school.

Returning teachers must attend every third year, minimum, and more often if possible.

To receive appropriate professional development in their subject matter, teachers must attend a session at a location where their academic Faculty Liaison is in attendance. The time spent receiving mentoring from the liaison is often the most appreciated aspect of the Summer Institute and fulfills a requirement of state law and NACEP accreditation.

Instructors who are approved to teach in more than one discipline need to attend SI for each discipline every third year or more often. For example, teaching math and physics means attending a one-day SI and meeting with the math department, and attending another SI and meeting with the physics department.

All partners, including district and school administrators and counselors, benefit from the information. Having support from the front office reinforces the objectives and validates the efforts of the students toward reaching their educational goals.

Changes in policy and procedure do influence the classrooms. It’s important to receive current information from CWU, the CiHS program, and updates from OSPI.

Registration for Summer Institute usually opens in spring, and information will be provided at that time regarding which liaisons will be present at each location. Check back for updates, and keep this information in mind as summer vacation plans come together.

Summer Institute is a one-day, no-cost opportunity for professional development and peer networking which is held six times over the summer: twice on the CWU Ellensburg campus, once in Eastern Washington, once in Western Washington, and twice through a online modalities.

Summer Institute 2024

For SI 2024 there will be both in-person and online opportunities to attend. This year we will be providing a $200 stipend to anyone who attends this year's Summer Institute training and completes the necessary requirements. This stipend is in addition to the clock hours we offer for our instructors who attend. For instructors who are approved for more than one discipline and need to attend more than once, you will be compensated for each event that you attend.

Our High School Partnerships team has created two Canvas courses designed to supplement our administrative presentations of our Summer Institute trainings. One of these courses is catered to our veteran instructors (those who have taught College in the High School Courses with CWU before) while the other is specific to our newly approved adjunct faculty members and high school administrators. This is planned to allow for more discussion and dialouge at Summer Institute rather than us talking to you all the whole time.

To receive credit for completing Summer Institute as well as to receive the stipend, you are required to complete one of the assigned Canvas courses. The course for veteran teachers is about a half hour in length while the course for new instructors/administrators is about an hour in length. With these courses, you do not need to complete them in one session. You can complete the course at your own pace that works with your schedule. However, we encourage that you complete this course prior to attending Summer Institute.

You must complete the Canvas course before 11:59 pm on Friday August 16th, 2024. Any instructor who has not completed the course by this deadline will not have met the requirements of CWU College in the High School and will not be able to teach during the 2023-24 academic school year. You will not be added to a Canvas course until after you have registered for a Summer Institute date.

Please note that not all liaisons will be available at all six sessions.
