Justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are all core to CWU's values and mission to increase access to higher education for everyone regardless of identity. At CWU we work to ensure everyone's voice is not only heard, but recognized and valued. We consistently strives to provide a safe, welcoming, and forward-thinking institution for all employees, students, and community members.

  • Faculty and Staff Resources: A listing of resources from within our university community and other sources to assist Faculty and Staff.
  • HERC Membership: CWU’s membership in the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) demonstrates our commitment to recruiting practices that are transparent and equitable and to creating a diverse and supportive academic environment.
  • Honored for Diversity: CWU has received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award for six consecutive years for our demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • LGBTQ+ Friendly Campus: Campus Pride, a leading national nonprofit working to encourage safe campuses for LGBTQ students, selected CWU as one of the top LGBT-friendly schools in the nation in the Campus Pride 2014 Top 50 LGBT-Friendly Colleges & Universities. CWU’s five-star rating signifies the highest percentages across eight benchmarks for policies, programs, and practices.
  • Veteran's Supportive Campus: CWU has been formally recognized as a “Veteran Supportive Campus,” according to the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs. Visit CWU’s Career Services or the Veterans Center for assistance with resumes or translating military experience.

From student led, institutional, and even community initiatives, we know the work and movement toward an equitable world never stops.

  • Workforce Diversity Plan is an initiative to create and support a diverse workforce that is reflective of the communities we purport to serve.
  • Faculty Fellows Initiative focuses on anti-racist training, and scholarship, and pedagogy related to faculty research; its goal is to meet the current needs for faculty training (pedagogical and interpersonal) as a retention effort for minoritized faculty and students.
  • Ellensburg City Council Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Commission is an community based initiative by the Ellensburg city council that aims to solve inequity and exclusion within the city.

As the largest employer in the city of Ellensburg and home to some of the largest facilities and buildings within the community we work to ensure we are implementing sustainable practices in everything we do.

Get Involved

Students at Club Fair

  • Employees of Color Equity Council (ECEC) is an advisory board that makes recommendations to the President via the Vice President of Inclusivity and Diversity on all matters pertaining to diversity, or issues that affect faculty/staff of color.
  • Equity & Services Council (ESC) Organizations are student led identity-based organizations within the Associated Students of Central Washington University (ASCWU) Student Government. Faculty and staff interested in mentoring student leaders within their respective ESC organization can become a primary or secondary advisor.
  • City of Ellensburg Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission is a newly formed commission compromised of community members interested in creating changes in the City of Ellensburg in regards to DEI. Although, the commission has been chosen their meetings are open to the public.
