Hazing Prevention Committee
In accordance with RCW 28B.10.905, CWU has established a Hazing Prevention Committee dedicated to developing and implementing strategies to end hazing in all forms on our campus. This committee plays a key role in ensuring that our prevention efforts are collaborative, effective, and community-driven. The prevention of hazing is a shared responsibility. Through the collaborative efforts of the Hazing Prevention Committee, we are building a culture where students are protected, supported, and empowered to speak out.
Committee Responsibilities
The Hazing Prevention Committee is responsible for:
- Developing and recommending hazing prevention policies and programs
- Collaborating with student groups, athletics, and residence life to ensure compliance and education
- Supporting the implementation of mandatory hazing prevention training for students and employees
- Reviewing hazing reports and recommending improvements to campus prevention efforts
- Helping plan and promote an annual hazing prevention education events
Membership
Sam’s Law requires that the Hazing Prevention Committee include a minimum of six members including a designated chair appointed by the CWU President. Fifty percent of the committee positions shall include students currently attending the higher education institution with at least one position filled by a student from a student organization, athletic team, or living group.
The other fifty percent of the committee positions shall include at least one faculty or staff member and one parent or legal guardian of a student currently enrolled at the institution. Student input shall be considered for committee membership. A student who is a member of a student organization, athletic team, or living group that was affiliated with a finding of a hazing violation within the last twelve months may not participate in or be a member of the hazing prevention committee.
