Internship Program Admissions (Updated 9/1/2023)

"Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:"

The intern selection team screens applications for interests, aptitudes and prior training experiences appropriate for our university Counseling Clinic’s goals and objectives. In particular, we seek applicants who have adequate practicum experience and academic training to work effectively with a college student population. Transcripts of grades are also examined to ensure adequate number of classes covering clinical theories and intervention strategies, ethics and issues of diversity. Although previous college counseling experience is preferred, it is not required, but an applicant must demonstrate through their cover letter how their past experience and training is applicable to our setting. Applications that reflect supervision experiences that include video (preferred) or audio recording reviews are given stronger consideration over applications that do not have video or audio recording based supervision.

Does the program require that applicants have received a minimum number of hours of the following at time of application? If Yes, indicate how many:

Total Direct Contact Intervention Hours No*
Total Direct Contact Assessment Hours No*
*There are no minimums for each category, but a combined 500 hours is required (see below)

Describe any other required minimum criteria used to screen applicants:

Minimum requirements for consideration of an internship application are 500 hours of combined intervention and assessment experience on the APPIC Application for Internship and 1000 AAPI Grand Total Practicum Hours. We require that interns have their comprehensive exams and dissertation proposal completed prior to the application deadline. We also require that 2 out of the 3 letters of recommendation come from supervisors of clinical experience. Positive references from clinical supervisors, especially if the supervisor has had the opportunity to view videotaped sessions from the applicant, are given extra weight in the final ranking process.
