Service Drives

Rules and regulations for service drives and pedestrian malls

Due to the ever-increasing vehicle traffic on University pedestrian malls, University Police and Public Safety feel that there is a need to remind everyone of the policies regarding vehicles on the pedestrian malls.

There are to be no vehicles on the University pedestrian malls except in the following circumstances:

Service vehicles

Will be allowed to operate on the pedestrian malls only during times of limited pedestrian traffic and only in designated areas. Service vehicles will not be operated on the malls during times of heavy pedestrian traffic, i.e., during class break. If an operator of a service vehicle finds a need to enter a non-designated area on the malls, the operator will notify University Police and Public Safety.

Contractor vehicles

Will be allowed on the pedestrian malls only during the times of limited pedestrian traffic and ONLY IN DESIGNATED AREAS. Operators of these vehicles will also be required to obtain a permit from University Police and Public Safety before operating vehicles on the pedestrian malls. If a contractor has a need to enter a non-designated area on the malls, a supervisor will notify University Police and Public Safety. At no time will the pedestrian malls be used for the single purpose of convenience parking. During the time that a vehicle is not being used for the task at hand, it may be parked in designated parking lots with a parking permit purchased from a dispenser in various parking lots. A contractor permit is not a valid parking permit.

Delivery vehicles

Will be allowed on the pedestrian malls only in designated areas. At no time will these vehicles be allowed to enter non-designated areas. All operators of delivery vehicles will be required to obtain a service permit from University Police and Public Safety prior to operating a delivery vehicle on the malls.

Privately owned vehicles

Will only be allowed on the pedestrian malls or service drives in designated areas and during designated times throughout the academic year. The designated times will be determined as follows: Five days prior to the designated move-in period at the beginning of the academic year, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Fall and Winter quarters’ finals week, two days prior to the beginning of Winter and Spring quarters, and the last five days of Spring quarter. During these times, a Load/Unload Permit will not be required. These times will further be indicated by the blocking of the "Do Not Enter" signs at the entrances to the pedestrian malls and service drives. If drivers find a need to be on the pedestrian malls or service drives during any other time, they will be required to obtain a Load/Unload Permit from University Police and Public Safety prior to entering any of these areas.

At no time will verbal permission be given to operate a privately owned vehicle on the pedestrian malls or service drives. All permission will be given in the form of a Load/Unload Permit.

All vehicles operating on the pedestrian malls or service drives must adhere at all times to the 10-mph speed limit.

Please drive safely and be aware that driving on campus requires extra caution due to the number of pedestrians, bicyclists and limited driving areas.

Load/Unload and Service Permits

Are available from the University Police and Public Safety office located in the O-5 parking lot at 1211 N Wildcat Way. These permits allow a person to drive and/or park on a pedestrian mall or service drive to load and unload unusually heavy items. These permits are free but must be obtained prior to entering these areas.
