Waivers for Non-Resident Online Students
Matriculated students who are charged non-resident tuition and taking classes online or in hybrid format may qualify for a waiver to reduce the cost of tuition.

The information on this page applies from the 2026-27 academic year forward and replaces any prior policies and tuition waiver awards used prior to fall quarter 2026.

Undergraduates and Post-baccalaureates
Matriculated undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students participating in online, hyflex, or a combination of modalities (including in person) are eligible for the same waiver benefit as non-resident students enrolled in-person.
Pacific Northwest Scholarship - $18,600 per year: residents of the border states of Idaho and Oregon who meet eligibility requirements.
Destination Central Scholarship - $15,000 per year: residents of all states except for ID, OR, and WA who meet eligibility requirements.
These tuition scholarships are not available during summer quarter.
Eligibility requirements
- Matriculated undergraduate or post-baccalaureate status
- Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) guidelines
- 3.0 or above high school or transfer GPA for the initial award
- Maintain a 2.75 or greater CWU GPA to retain the scholarship
- Enroll full-time (12 or more credits) each quarter
- Students should enroll in 15 credits per quarter to graduate on time
Scholarship Conditions
The Pacific Northwest Scholarship and Destination Central are renewable for up to 12 academic quarters per student. A student who uses all 12 quarters as an undergraduate will not have additional eligibility if they choose to attend as a post-baccalaureate student.Other conditions:
- A student may receive either the Pacific Northwest Scholarship or Destination Central, not both.
- These scholarships are for tuition only. If the student has other awards that are designated to pay tuition, the merit scholarship may be reduced or canceled.
- Unapplied tuition scholarships cannot be refunded.
- All merit scholarships require students to be enrolled in at least 12 credits at the end of add/drop each quarter. The award will apply to tuition the following day.
- If a student does not complete any credits for the quarter, a minimum of 50% of the merit scholarship will be returned to CWU.
- Students must meet the standard, minimum renewal requirements by the conclusion of the academic year (fall, winter, spring, and summer quarters if attended) to be eligible to receive the scholarship for the following academic year.
- If a student is offered multiple awards from CWU designated for tuition, they cannot total more than 80% tuition.
- This scholarship is applied to tuition charges and cannot be refunded. If your program does not charge standard tuition through the student account, you are ineligible to use this award, and it will be canceled.
- If the student is non-resident but qualifies for resident tuition, they are ineligible for non-resident tuition waivers.
- The total award amount is for the academic year, evenly split between the fall, winter, and spring terms. Students who graduate in December are not eligible to receive the full academic year amount in one quarter.
- Non-matriculated students and students enrolled in self-supporting programs are not eligible to receive the waiver. For example: FLEX ITAM, Continuing Education, Career and Technical Education, or Occupational Education.
Graduates
Non-resident graduate students enrolled in an online Master’s degree program may be eligible to receive a tuition waiver allowing them to pay the resident tuition amount. For a complete list of online programs, visit the CWU Online Learning page.
The maximum full-time waiver amount for 2026-27 is $15,807.
General Requirements
- Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- There is no minimum enrollment requirement.
- Students physically attending any CWU campus location are not eligible.
- This scholarship is applied to tuition charges and cannot be refunded. If your program does not charge standard tuition through the student account, you are ineligible to use this award and it will be canceled.
- If the student is a non-resident but qualifies for resident tuition, they are ineligible for non-resident tuition waivers.
- The total award amount is for the academic year, evenly split between the fall, winter, and spring terms. Students who graduate in December are not eligible to receive the full academic year amount in one quarter.
