Grants
Grants
Grants, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid except in rare circumstances. Learn about the grant programs CWU participates in.
At CWU, students may qualify for federal, state, or institutional grants based on financial need, enrollment status, and academic progress. Grants are often automatically included in your financial aid package if you complete the FAFSA or WASFA by the priority deadline. Our team is here to help you understand your eligibility and make the most of the funding available.

Commonly Used Terms
Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with these terms—understanding financial aid can be confusing, and we’re here to help.
Grant: A type of financial aid that does not need to be repaid, typically awarded based on financial need.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): A required form used to determine your eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid, including most grants.
WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid): An alternative to the FAFSA for undocumented students or others who are not eligible for federal aid but may qualify for Washington State aid.
Cost of Attendance (COA): An estimate of total college costs, including tuition, fees, books, housing, and personal expenses, used to calculate financial aid eligibility.
Expected Family Contribution (EFC): A number calculated from your FAFSA or WASFA that colleges use to determine how much need-based aid you may receive.
Enrollment Status: Your credit load per quarter (e.g., full-time, part-time). This affects your grant eligibility and award amount.
Need-Based Aid: Financial aid awarded based on your financial situation, as determined by the information on your FAFSA or WASFA.
